Families of Addicts: How to Avoid the Manipulative Behavior of a Loved One

Sadly, drug and alcohol addiction and substance abuse are growing to be a very concerning and very serious issue in this country, one of which needs to be addressed and focused on as soon as is possible. The cruel factors and the cruel issues with drug and alcohol abuse and addiction in this country today are on the levels of being a full-on epidemic. What we have here is a situation where substance abuse, drug addiction, and alcohol addiction are all very concerning and very problematic, to say the least. These are now issues that have become more impacting and more dangerous and more serious than they have ever been before.

What a lot of people do not consider when they think of drug and alcohol use and abuse in the 21st century is the effect that it has on the family members and loved ones of a drug or an alcohol addict. These are issues and hardships and struggles that often get lost in the mix of all of the other issues that go along with substance abuse. There are twenty-three million Americans out there who are addicted to drugs and alcohol, and that is the most recent estimate as reported by the National Survey on Drug Use and Health.

However, a lot of people do not consider the other people who are also intensively affected by the substance abuses of those who consume drugs and alcohol. According to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, every single addict in this country is closely connected to about four or five people. These are family members, loved ones, friends, and close, personal associates. With each addict having about four or five close family members and loved ones though, that means that there are over one-hundred million Americans who are harshly and cruelly affected by drug and alcohol addicts in this country. This means that, between those addicted and their family members and loved ones, over a third of the entire country is sorely and severely affected by drugs and alcohol.

Drug User Behavior

Drug user behavior is definitely something to keep in mind and something to watch out for when the family members and loved ones of addicts are monitoring the behavior of those addicted to drugs and alcohol. Drug behavior signs and habits of a drug addict tend to be manipulative, they tend to be difficult and harsh for those persons. The drug user behavior tends to be harsh and cruel for the person and they tend to steal, lie, manipulate, and do other coercive and unpleasant things to those around them and to those who they claim to care about.

The main goal and intention of addiction treatment programs and recovery centers are to help to not only rehabilitate those who struggle with addiction but to address their behavior as well. Additionally, they can help to handle their behavior to the point where they are no longer manipulative or evil. The goal here needs to be to rehabilitate the entire individual, not just the actual addiction aspect of their problems. In this way, drug and alcohol addiction and substance abuse, in general, can finally be taken down a notch. Those who suffer and struggle with it can find their peace of mind, their stability, and their freedom from an addiction habit.
