Facts About Substance Abuse

Drug and alcohol addiction has risen up to stand amongst the ranks of some of the most seriously concerning problems in this country today, one of which has only gotten steadily and progressively worse and worse as the years have gone by.  Drug and alcohol addiction truly has skyrocketed from the problem it was in the 1990s, to a crisis in the early 2000s, and now to a full-on epidemic in the 2010s.  In fact, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention had this to say about drug and alcohol addiction in 2012:

  • “The threat levels for drug and alcohol addiction have now been changed to mark drug and alcohol addiction as being a full-on, legitimate epidemic in this country, one of which needs to be addressed sooner rather than later.  The problem is no longer a crisis.  In light of the changes and increases in the use and the abuse of pharmaceutical drugs, alcohol, and other narcotics, drug and alcohol addiction is now sadly an epidemic in this country.  Drug and alcohol addiction is one of the worst if not the worst health problem that our nation faces today.”

This is just one organization’s report and feedback on drug and alcohol addiction.  There are many others too.  For example:

  • According to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, approximately two-hundred to three-hundred thousand Americans are able to beat their habits to drug and alcohol addiction each and every year.  However, also according to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, roughly three-hundred and fifty thousand to four hundred thousand Americans become addicted to drug and alcohol each and every year.  Realistically, this is just taking one step forward and two steps back with our current approach to addressing drug and alcohol addiction.
  • According to the National Survey on Drug Use and Health, drug and alcohol addiction costs the United States about four-hundred billion dollars annually.  In addition to that, drug and alcohol addiction has become so prevalent now that people are abusing drugs and alcohol at younger and younger years.  For example, in the 1990s, the average first age of substance abuse was about 23.  Now the average age of first ever experiences with substances is 17.  This bodes poorly for the younger generation.
  • According to the National Institute on Drug Abuse, roughly twenty-three million Americans are addicted to drugs and alcohol today.  That is more than double the number of Americans who were addicted in the year 1999, so that truly does show just how bad drug and alcohol addiction is getting in this country.
  • According to the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism, alcohol is the single most concerning and troubling aspect of drug and alcohol addiction in this country, one of which without a doubt causes the biggest of problems.  According to the NIAAA, alcohol has addicted about fifteen million Americans, and most of the addiction problems and crisis factors that occur in this country come from alcohol abuse.
  • According to the Trust for American Health, almost everyone knows someone who is addicted to drugs and alcohol.  Also, about fifty percent of the U.S. population not only knows someone who is addicted to drugs and alcohol but also has someone who is addicted in their life and affecting them in some way.  In addition to that about one in three Americans actually, has an addict within the family.

We can see from the above facts about substance abuse that drug and alcohol addiction is truly a concerning and a problematic issue, one of which needs to be addressed sooner rather than later.  In light of the concerns and the problems of addiction, it is unknown as to when this will be done exactly, but efforts need to be taken along this line.
